The ViewLondon Review
Jongleurs Camden - part of the popular chain of comedy clubs - is definitely worth a try if you fancy a change from your usual club haunts. Just avoid sitting at the front if you don’t want to be made a laughing stock. The VenueJust by the Waterfront of Camden, you’ll be greeted at Jongleurs by a friendly host - the sort of wannabe comic who will welcome you and your friends with a joke.
The bar itself is relatively big with a capacity of up to 400 people. The floor is broken up into levels to provide plenty of seating and good visibility of the acts on the central stage. Despite there being two well-spaced bars available, the queues can be long before the show. Once the comedy is over, the chairs and tables are pulled away and the lower level and stage transform into a dancefloor whereupon club music blares out the speakers where before there were just jokes.
The AtmosphereThe eclectic crowd usually arrives at Jongleurs Camden in the guise of big groups of friends, work colleagues, hen parties and couples. Once you’re seated and have ordered your drinks and food the show kicks in. The host on stage will banter and introduce the three performers – they’re known to involve the crowds (particularly those at the front) so if you’re not a fan of audience participation then prepare to keep your head down. On the whole, the comedians are funny and entertaining – to the point where your stomach will ache with laughter.
The FoodThere’s a small, basic but decent menu at Jongleurs Camden, offering typical finger pickers and curly chips as well as burgers and curry at reasonable prices. It’s designed to fill a hole and nothing costs more than £6.
The DrinkThe bar offers jugs of cocktails as well as spirits and beer. These may be served at the table in between performances or at the bar – it’s not a good idea to get up mid-performance to buy a drink if you don’t fancy being on the receiving end of all the jokes when you get back to your seat.
For lager lovers, options include John Smiths Smooth, Carlsberg, Fosters, Strongbow, Guinness, Stella Artois and Kronenbourg 1664 on draught, with Becks, Stella Artois, Corona, Budweiser and Peroni in bottles. There are also a handful of reds, whites and roses to choose from.
The Last WordFor a light-humoured, entertaining evening then Jongleurs Camden fits the bill.
