The ViewLondon Review
A hidden gem in the heart of Soho, The Rex Cinema and Bar combines the feel of being in opulent surroundings with a relaxed, friendly atmosphere. The VenueThe Rex is situated down one of the larger side streets off Shaftesbury Avenue. Once through the doors, you walk down a long red-carpeted corridor and into the bar, which doubles up as a small club – it opens until 3am and has its own dancefloor. The theme is 1930s-inspired decadence, and surrounding the dancefloor are plush velvet seats, banquettes and leather armchairs and sofas, interspersed with their own tables. The colours are rich and the mirrors add shine and the illusion of more space. Elaborate chandeliers hanging from the ceiling complete the look. There are also large booths set apart from the dancefloor – large, yet intimate spaces for gatherings and conversations. It is a members’ club, and once accepted (for a fee of £250) you get benefits such as priority entrance, discounted hire and free cinema tickets for you and limited guests.
The AtmosphereThe key to the charm of The Rex Cinema and Bar lies in its size. The small space fosters intimacy and friendliness – there is none of the sweaty sardine-tin meat-market nor the pretentious people-watching about this club, even though it is ostensibly popular with certain celebrities. It doesn’t get very busy until around 11pm, but when it fills up you feel as though you’re part of one big party. The clientele tends to be well-dressed but relaxed, and is generally made up of those who enjoy the trappings of an upmarket West End club without the pretentiousness and vast expense.
The MusicThe music at The Rex Cinema and Bar is generally a mix of songs intended to get people up, dancing and having a good time – again, nothing pretentious here. Every night DJs blend chart hits with classics from past decades, cheese, disco, RnB – all sorts. There are also theme nights such as 80s Night; and the clientele usually try to dress to match (although this is not compulsory).
The DrinkThere is a long cocktail list; some of which are delicious1930s-inspired recipes, and lots of champagnes and wines. They sell a few bottled beers and have a range of whiskeys and other spirits. The prices are average for the area.
The FoodThe Rex offers a standard bar food/bites menu, offering dishes such as pizza and platters to share, from 6pm to 1am, and a wider range of food for private parties. Again, prices are fair for the area.
The Last WordThe Rex Cinema and Bar is definitely the place to go for those who like to party in a classy but relaxed and friendly atmosphere. The intimacy and catchy music make it a welcoming venue and a fun night out.
