British Food Fortnight is just around the corner, which has left us wondering – just what exactly is British food? Fish and chips? Spotted dick? Chicken tikka masala? There are loads of different interpretations on what a classic British dish is - one man’s Sunday roast is another man’s jellied eels, you could say.
So with that in mind we’ve come up with a list of a few London restaurants we think epitomise classic British restaurants. From traditional dishes to innovative cuisine, London’s got it all.
First off, we’re huge fans of Roast. Whatever meal you have, whether it’s a breakfast or, er, a roast, it seems like this place can do no wrong. And as a bonus, it’s located in London’s foodie capital, Borough Market, where local British producers (not to mention loads of others) offer up their delicious wares.

Next we’ve got St John, a restaurant that rocked the waters of British cuisine when it opened up in 1994 and introduced nose-to-tail dining to the London foodie scene. Eating the whole animal? Sacre bleu! But it completely changed Londoners’ way of eating, and for that it’ll always hold a place in our hearts.
And finally, if Roast and St John are a little bit out of your price range head to S&M Cafe which is about as cheap and cheerful as you can get. From its retro-cool decor to its quirky menu, you can get a bang-up meal of bangers and mash for under a tenner.
Can’t wait till 20th September, when the British Food Fortnight starts? This weekend’s Regent Street Festival has a British theme so make sure you pop your head into the Regent Street restaurants and see what they’re serving up.
British food, we tip our hats to you!
